Chords and lyrics figured out by ear by CowPatty
(Note: That first version was sent in just a couple of days after the
song was released. I got a ton of comments on this and many of you noted
that I left out the C or C7 change and the words "rollin' north" - so I
got that straigtened out. This should be more accurate, now. You can
play this song with a D, G, and C, but it really gives it a more sultry
sound with 7th chords throughout as shown (as many rockabilly songs do,
and it sounds especially good in the absence of the dobro or resonator
guitar). I recommend playing the C7 [x32310], the D7 slid up a couple
frets from that with the both e strings muted [x5453x], the G7 as a
barre chord [353463], and the A7 slid up a couple frets from that as a
[575685], though other voicings can be suitable, too.)
(Dobro Intro)
D7 - G7 - D7
G7- D7
A7 - C7 - G7 - D7
[D7] Well, it's a long way to Richmond, [G7] rollin' north on Ninety-[D7
]five,
With a [G7] redhead ridin' shotgun and a pistol by by my [D7] side,
[A7] Tearin' down that highway like a [C7] modern day [G7] Bonnie and
[D7] Clyde.
We [D7] met at a truckstop, [G7] Johnson City, Tennes-[D7]see,
I was [G7] gassin' up my Firebird, when I heard her callin' [D7] me,
Said, [ A7] "Which way are you headed, boy, -- [C7] Do you need [G7]
some compa-[D7]ny?"
She had me [D7] stoppin' at a Quik-Mart [G7] before we made it out of
[D7] town,
[G7] Next thing she was runnin' at me, tellin' me to "Lay that hammer
[D7] down,
'Cause there's a [A7] man right behind me, [C7] doin' his [G7] best to
slow me [D7] down!"
[D7] Yeah, and it's a long way to Richmond, [G7] rollin' north on
Ninety-[D7]five,
With a [G7] redhead ridin' shotgun and a pistol by my [D7] side,
[A7] Tearin' down that highway like a [C7] modern day [G7] Bonnie and
[D7]Clyde.
(Dobro bridge)
D7 - G7 - D7,
G7 - D7
A7 - C7 - G7 - D7
[D7] Well, we pulled up to a motel, [G7]in the middle of the [D7] night,
[G7] We were countin' all the money, smokin' stolen Marlboro [D7]
Lights,
Lord, we [A7] never saw 'em comin' [C7] 'til they read [G7] us both our
[D7] rights.
[D7] Yeah, and it's a long way to Richmond, [G7] rollin' north on
Ninety-[D7] five,
[G7] With a sheriff right beside me, pistol pointin' at my [D7] side,
-- oh, lord,
Such a dis-[A7]-appointing ending for this [C7] modern day [G7] Bonnie
and [D7] Clyde.
(Dobro outro)
Yeah, D7 - G7 - D7
Hey, G7- D7
Well, A7 - C7 - G7 - D7
Have fun!
